Situation:
Darfur, Sudan
On 15 October 2008, Pre-Trial
Chamber I issued a decision requesting the Prosecution to
submit, no later than 16.00 hours on 17 November 2008,
additional supporting materials in relation to some confidential
aspects of the Prosecution's request for a warrant of arrest for
the Sudanese President, Omar Hassan Al Bashir.
On 14 July 2008, the
Prosecutor made a request to Pre Trial Chamber I for the
issuance of a warrant of arrest for the Sudanese President, Omar
Hassan Al Bashir, for war crimes, crimes against humanity and
genocide allegedly committed by him through members of the state
apparatus, the army and the Militia/Janjaweed in the context of
an armed conflict against organised rebel groups.
The situation in Darfur,
Sudan, was referred to the International Criminal Court by the
United Nations Security Council under resolution 1593 of 31
March 2005. The Prosecutor opened an investigation into the
situation on 6 June 2005.
The case of The Prosecutor v.
Omar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir is the second case arising from the
situation in Darfur, Sudan, and concerns crimes committed in
Darfur from March 2003 to July 2008. In the first case arising
from the same situation, on 1 May 2007, Pre-Trial Chamber I
issued warrants of arrest for Ahmad Muhammad Harun, former
Minister of State for the Interior of the Government of the
Sudan and currently Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs,
and Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman ('Ali Kushayb'), a leader of
the Militia/Janjaweed, for crimes against humanity and war
crimes |
